WELCOME to the Western Montana Search Dogs website!

Western Montana Search Dogs, WMSD, is a volunteer, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing trained search dog teams to requesting agencies. Our group has specially trained dog/handler teams in various locations throughout Montana. Teams are available for call-out on a 24-hour basis through the Gallatin County Sheriff's Department at (406) 582-2100 extension 2.

WMSD teams are specially trained and certified in:

  • avalanche
  • air-scenting
  • trailing/tracking
  • water recovery
  • article/evidence
  • human remains recovery

Before teams from WMSD can respond to actual searches, each dog and handler must undergo hours of training. The team must pass a certification test. This test of skill helps to insure a good quality response when it counts the most.

Our dog handlers are medically certified first responders and they also complete hours of special training in the use of maps and compass, GPS, radio communications, search procedures, and avalanche safety.

Typical searches include overdue hunters, drowning victims, snowmobilers or skiers caught in an avalanche, and lost children.

WMSD works in conjunction with many other special search and rescue resources including divers, foot searchers, searchers on horseback, or in aircraft.

All our services are offered free of charge. Requesting agencies are never billed for our services. However, contributions to help us cover travel expenses are always very much appreciated.
